Bernard Lewis, FBA [1] (– 19 May ) was a British-American historian specialized in Oriental studies. [2] He was also known as a public intellectual and political commentator. Brought up in a London Jewish family, Bernard Lewis early showed a flair for lan-guages and history, taking a SOAS History MA and then PhD. He is the Cleveland E. Dodge Professor Emeritus of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. He specializes in the history of Islam and the interaction between Islam and the West, and is especially famous in academic circles for his works on the history of the Ottoman Empire.
