Norman Colin Dexter (29 September – 21 March ) was an English crime writer known for his Inspector Morse series of novels, which were written between 19and adapted as an ITV television series, Inspector Morse, from to Dexter began writing his first mystery novel to alleviate boredom on a rainy family vacation in the early s. His novels feature Morse, who is given to theorizing complex solutions to the crimes he has set out to understand, and his more practical and long-suffering partner, Detective Sgt. Lewis.
