Thomas Carlyle (4 December – 5 February ) was a Scottish essayist, historian and philosopher. Known as the " sage of Chelsea ", his writings strongly influenced the intellectual and artistic culture of the Victorian era. Carlyle was born in Ecclefechan, a village in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Thomas Carlyle was a Scottish historian and essayist, whose major works include The French Revolution, 3 vol. (), On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History (), and The History of Friedrich II of Prussia, Called Frederick the Great, 6 vol. (–65).
